When it comes to gravel routes, you can say we are kind of a big deal. Home to the former Opal Wapoo Gravel Experience gravel race, the roads here are primed for some epic riding. Routes below.

We love sharing our favorite routes and love nothing more than to see cyclists in Excelsior enjoying coffee at Other Trails or a post ride brew or meal. Please note these routes are provided as a courtesy; Other Trails is not responsible for anyone riding these routes. Please be prepared for rugged gravel roads with tough climbs and proper fluid and nutrition. These are remote areas without places to refuel, unless otherwise noted.

OPAL 52-MILE ROUTE

The OG Opal Wapoo 52-mile route - this route is full of punchy climbs, curvy roads and incredible views. Bring your climbing legs, the hills out here are like no other. Note this route is in a remote area - so be prepared with proper drinks and nutrition!

A TASTE OF THE RIVER FLATS (33 MILES)

One of our favorites, this route gets you warmed up with some climbing before flowing into the river flats south of town. You spend quite a bit of time on pancake-flat gravel surrounded by farmland, before climbing your way back to Excelsior. There is a gas station roughly 13 miles into this route.

WAPOO 100-MILE ROUTE

The 2022 version of the Opal Wapoo 100-mile route (slightly altered to begin/end at Other Trails) takes you deep into the gravel roads south, east and north of Excelsior Springs. Note this route is in a remote area - so be prepared with proper drinks and nutrition for this distance!

SHAMROCK HILLS WINERY LOOP (18 MILES)

This route rakes you out via the same opening miles as the Opal Wapoo and on one of our favorite roads to ride - the famous Wolf Hollow. Tackle some of the toughest climbs and take a break at Shamrock Hills Winery close to mile 10 before completing your loop back to Excelsior.
